KCCN sets up Taekwondo trainings for students in Lagos, Abuja schools

The Korea Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) has begun training sessions for selected public schools in Lagos state and Abuja.

This was disclosed in a statement by the centre on Wednesday in Abuja.

Part of the statement reads, “As part of efforts to develop Nigeria taekwondo at the grassroots level, the Korean Cultural Centre Nigeria (KCCN) had put in place a termly taekwondo training project for selected Basic schools in the Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) and Lagos.

“The following are the selected five schools in Abuja with permanent taekwondo training infrastructures and two in Lagos involved in the KCCN Public school Taekwondo project: Nigeria-Korea Model school, Piwoyi , Lugbe Road Abuja, Junior Sec School Maitama Abuja, LEA Wuse Zone 3, Abuja, LEA Maitama Abuja, LEA Wuse Zone 2 Abuja, Boys Junior academy, Mandillas, Lagos Island and Kuramo Junior High School, Sandfill, Victoria Island Lagos.

“Unlike the Abuja training project which is about 5 years old, the Lagos training commenced June 2023. Current training class for the first term 2023/24 academic session will end on Friday November 24, 2023.

“Forty (40) students are trained in each of these schools with experienced taekwondo instructors. The KCCN, through its support agencies, regularly supply these schools with uniforms, first-aid kits and other taekwondo training accessories to further aid in the successful running of the project as well as strengthening the interest and skills of the students in those schools.

“A biennial U-15 taekwondo championship is always organised for Taekwondo students of these schools. The last edition was held in November 2022 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja. The next edition is expected to hold towards the end of the year 2024.

“The LEA Wuse Zone 3 school for instance, has produced both male and female champions in Taekwondo Sparring and Poomsae. Some have even won medals at the 2023 FCT Unity Taekwondo Cup. This proves how this project has been and will continue to nurture the dreams of these students into becoming great taekwondo athletes.”

KCCN has been notable for remarkable contributions in the development of Taekwondo in Nigeria over the years.
