Kano state sponsors marriage of 1,500 widows

Emir of Kano Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi II has presided over the solemnization of the marriage of about 1,500 widows sponsored by the Kano state government.

While addressing the couples shortly after the formal consummation of the marriage held at the Kano Central Mosque yesterday, Sanusi said it had been a remarkable blessing for the widows and their life partners to get married at this material point in time adding that no Woman could ever earn credibility, respect and honour without   being under the custody of a husband.

He said Islam has ordained every Muslim man to get married in as much as one is financially capable to shoulder the stipulated responsibility of providing shelter, feeding and clothing stressing that the Women on their part have an abiding obligation to be totally loyal and respectful to their spouses, in as much as what they have directed them to do does not contravene the injunctions of Islams.

He said: “As you are getting married today, you are expected to be obedient to your respective husbands.

“Being recalcitrant, would earn you the wrath of God and that doing anything to spoil this relationship would be a bad riddance. You would be making a great disservice to yourself if you take yourself back to square one and continue to live in solitary condition.

“Turning to you husbands, your responsibility in making this relationship realistic is enormous. You must rise to this challenge by ensuring that you feed, clothe and shelter your wives as ordained by Islam. Keeping them under your custody does not mean that you should be ruthless and high-handed. Once you fail to deliver on this required obligations .you are making the relationship superfluous, “ he said.

In their separate reactions the couples commended the governor for mooting the idea of sponsoring the widows’ marriage pointing out that without the governor’s concern, the giant stride would not have successfully been effected.
