Kannywood lacks planning, leadership – Balannaji

Zubairu M. Balannaji popularly known as Balannaji, is a talented film writer, continuity and production manager in Kannywood. In his interview with IBRAHIM HAMISU, he speaks on his success and among other issues.

You are one of the successful people on Kannywood. What would you say are your achievements?

Alhamdulillah. In terms of achievements, I have nothing to say except thanks be to God.

I gained the love of people, interacted with those I couldn’t before, and achieved fame and financial security. I thank God because I lack nothing in this business!

Have you faced any challenge in your career?

Every successful journey can’t be unconnected with challenges. I faced challenges publishing my first book and marketing it.

Lack of awareness and being young were hurdles I had to surmount; but my late father played a vital role in supporting my dreams.

Another challenge was producing my first film, Kan Ta Kile where I encountered various difficulties.

Do you have a mentor in Kannywood?

Yes, my boss is Alhaji Mujitaba Na’abba, the producer of the movie Kan Ta Kile. He has supported me in various aspects of my life.

Can you remember a movie that was difficult for you to write?

Yes, currently, I am writing one, Fansar Ruhi, a traditional film without modern elements.

It presents the lifestyle of a typical Hausa man 300 years ago.

Which of your movies is your favorite?

I prefer Kan Ta Kile because I wrote and produced it, ensuring the story’s needs were met during filming.

Actually, Fansar Ruhi is my favorite as it’s purely traditional.

Do you like or follow the style of another writer?

I create my style differently, even in writing my books. Kan Ta Kile was written and edited in a new style, distinct from other Hausa movies.

Where do you think there are gaps in the way Kannywood is run?

There is a lack of good planning and leadership. The industry’s founders did not establish a plan or necessary laws, leading to a lack of structure.

Discipline and self-control were assumed, not anticipating the undisciplined entering the industry.

What is your dream for the future?

My biggest goal is for the viewers to understand the messages we send.

I hope to retire in good health and depart this world in good faith. I am trusting God to fulfill these wishes.

How do you see Kannywood in 10 years?

In 10 years, I foresee progress in modern equipment, but a setback in discipline.

Lack of reprimand and punishment for erring members will persist.

Social media’s increasing influence may leak industry secrets, posing challenges.
