Kaduna health workers suspend strike

Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kaduna state chapter, has suspended its 21-day old strike.
Blueprint gathered that the decision followed a discussion between ad hoc   committee set up by the House of Assembly to mediate between the state government and the union.

The 10-man committee, headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Peter Adamu, had a closed door meeting with the workers and the NCL to discuss how to resolve the strike.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after the meeting, the Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) of Kaduna state chapter, Mr John Akogu, on behalf of the workers called on members to return to their duty posts.

Akogu said the health workers had reached amicable position and decided to call off the strike embarked upon by (MHWUN).
“We have reached an understanding with the government, hence this action is suspended,” he said.
He, therefore, encouraged members to be up and doing and to show more commitment in their work places “for us to be able to cover the new development which is the 30 per cent that we have been struggling for.”

Also speaking, the Head of Service, Mr Akila Bungwon, appreciated the union leaders for their understanding, noting that “because in any disagreement dialogue is the answers.”

Bungwon commended the House of Assembly for its intervention and appealed to the workers to ensure diligence at their work places.
Chairman of the union, Mrs. Cecilia Musa, said in an exclusive interview with Blueprint that “considering the appeal and timely intervention of the committee led by the deputy speaker/honourable members/NLC strike action committee respectively, the union considered the appeal and considered the condition which citizens faced daily.
