Justice reform team joins fight against GBV in Yobe

The Muslim Sisters organisation of Nigeria,Yobe state Chapter partnership with Yobe state Justice Reform Team And International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) on Thursday organised  a one-day comprehensive training and capacity building for judges, prosecutors and other relevant stakeholders involved in handling Gender Based Violence cases in Yobe state.

The one-day event brought together experts from the legal profession, security sector, prosecutors and the team from the Muslim sisters organisation of Nigeria, Yobe state, who brainstormed among themselves, raising fundamental issues on the  subject matter.

In her opening remarks, the executive director of MSON, Yobe state chapter, Hajiya Magajiya Kellumi, said co-opting the justice reform sector into the campaign against GBV “becomes necessary as they are critical partners in handling cases of GBV in the state.”

Also speaking, the project coordinator, Yusuf Imam Kagara, said the objective of the one-day engagement “is an avenue for the stakeholders to deliberate and come out with a position on the best approach to handling issues of BBV in society.”

In a paper presentation one of the resource persons, Mr. Babayo Ngadda Abdullahi, dwelt on the provision of the law on GBV.

Also, in her presentation, the chairperson of FIDA Damaturu branch, Hannatu Farouk Jauro, stressed victim interviewing techniques where participants contributed as to how to engage a victim while trying to find out    occurrence of rape or any sexual assault.

“Despite difficulties in prosecuting GBV, cases at least some level of progress have been made with the enactment of VAPP law in the state,” she said.
