Job racketeering: We didn’t breach federal character principle – JAMB

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAM) has  said it did not act in breach of the federal character principles in its job recruitment exercises.

Registrar of the board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, stated this Monday while appearing before the ad-hoc committee of the House of Representatives Investigating Federal Ministries, Department and Agencies (MDAs) Parastatals and Tertiary Institutions on Mismanagement of Personnel Recruitment, Employment Racketeering and Gross Mismanagement of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, (IPPIS).

He said the board did sought and got waiver from the relevant agencies to employ staff in replacement of those who have exited service over different circumstances as required by law.

“We used the waiver because we believe the exigency of the time and the nature of our work deserves it. We are to advertise for the three hundred, we wouldn’t be able to meet up with what we needed them for.

“I believe very strongly that it was very necessary at that time that we recruited and I assure we did not surcharge those who are qualified,” he said.

He added that to the best of his ability, the recruitment followed due process.

Chairman of the Ad-hoc committee, Hon Yusuf Gagdi, however said that JAMB cannot be exonerated for not advertising vacancies, adding that by not advertising the vacancies, ordinary Nigerians have been robbed of the available opportunities.
