Imo assembly buiilding ‘near collapse’ as power failure disrupts sitting

The Imo State House of Assembly led by Rt. Hon. Acho Ihim, Tuesday had its sitting disrupted as a result of sudden power failure.

This happened some minutes after House members finished their deliberations on some issues raised at the Committee of the Whole House stage, just a few minutes after Speaker Ihim returned to his official seat to continue with the normal sitting.
As the Speaker was busy trying to move to the next item on the order paper, the generating set that had given power to the assembly building suddenly came to a halt, thereby leaving the lawmakers to scamper for safety.

Within few minutes, the chamber was deserted and the attendants who were sitting very close went and locked the chamber as though they were waiting for that to happen.

Blueprint correspondent who made effort to find out why the sitting ended abruptly with no effort on the part of the lawmakers to resume sitting and continue from where they stopped, gathered that it was because of unavailability of diesel and that the lawmakers were not in the mood to continue as it was already past 3pm.
As a result, sitting was adjourned to next week.

Meanwhile, the Plaster of Paris (POP) of the assembly building constructed some months ago by Roche, a company said to be owned by the out-going governor of the state, Owelle Rochas Okorocha is caving in and  would come down in a matter of days.

Going round the lobby, our correspondent noticed big cracks capable of hiding big animals within, with the structure shifting and ready to pull down.

The current legislative leadership appears helpless on proffering solution to the problem, especially as the current House will be winding up in a few weeks’ time.
A source in the Speaker’s office in confidence said: “the focus of Oga Speaker right now is to finish his tenure and run away from there and leave everything for the incoming House to handle.”
