I’ll reposition Unilorin – VC

Newly appointed vice-chancellor, University of Ilorin, Sulyman Age Abdulkareem, has assured the university community of consolidated from where his predecessors stopped in the guest to develop the institution.

Abdulkareem said in the Unilorin Bulletin made available to Blueprint shortly after his appointment that he would do his best to raise the banner of the ‘Better by far University’ even higher.

“I thank Almighty Allah for the grace of being appointed.

I know that everybody that entered the race was confi dent and competent also, but at the end, only one person can emerge and I thank God I was the one”, Abdulkareem said.

A renowned Professor of Chemical Engineering and inventor of an anti-oil spillage substance, the Unilorin Oil Sorbing Wafers, is the immediate past Vice-Chancellor of AlHikmah University, Ilorin, an a Specialist in Heterogeneous Catalysis/Reaction Engineering.

Th e Chairman of the University Governing Council, Dr. Abdullah Jibril Oyekan announced his appointment on August 28, 2017, after the 155th meeting of the Council, saying that the Abdulkareem would take over from the incumbent Prof.

AbdulGaniyu Ambali, when he “steps down on October 16 this year”.

Addressing journalists in the University Council Chamber, Oyekan said: “At its meeting, the Council, in accordance with the University Act and the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) (Amendment) Act 2003, considered the recommendation of the Selection Board and I am happy to announce that the Council approved the appointment of Professor Sulyman Age Abdulkareem as the 10th VC of the University of Ilorin”.

Oyekan disclosed that the Council commenced the process for the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor on April 14, 2017 with the vacancy announcement in two national newspapers.

“Th e advertisement was also placed on the University website and the University weekly Bulletin”, he said.

According to the Council Chairman, “Interested applicants were given six weeks to submit their applications with a closing date of May 26, 2017.

Immediately thereafter, Council met and constituted the joint Council/Senate Selection Board as well as the Search Team for the appointment of a new ViceChancellor”.

Oyekan said that the “Search Team cast its net very wide with visits to several universities in the various geographical zones of the country, making contacts with several senior academic staff in the institutions who might not have applied for the position.

“At the end of the exercise, the selection board forwarded its recommendations to the Council for further consideration”, he said
