I make a living, get respect out of writing – Yahaya S. Yahaya

Yahaya S. Kaya is a prolific screenwriter who has churned out more than 20 films in Kannywood. In this interview with IBRAHIM HAMISU in Kano, he speaks on his history and what he has achieved since he joined Kannywood eight years ago.

Background

My name is Yahaya S. Kaya. I am a writer. I write books and film scripts. I was born in Zaria in 1996, and I grew up there. I studied in Zaria from primary up to the National Diploma in Computer Science. I’m currently undergoing an online degree programme at the University of the People, California.

How did you get yourself into Kannywood?

I was not a fan of reading Hausa books. One day, I was at school and I saw a friend of mine with a book, Mata Hudu. I borrowed the book and read it. From then I felt like I could write a book. I then began to write a book titled Dan Shugaban Kasa. That is the genesis of my venturing into writing.

Kannywood has many specialisations; where is your main area?

I specialise in screenplay, meaning that I am a writer.

Which year did you start writing films and with what film did you start?

I started writing films in 2016, and my first film that was shot was called Ruhin Safna

How many movies have you written so far?

I have written over 20 movies. I wrote some alone, while some were in collaborations with other writers. Some of them include Dafin Zuciya; Zuciya; Sirrin Boye; Ke Duniya; Alhaki, and Agolan Ƙauye

In addition to writing, what other areas do you want to specialise in?

I want to start producing my films if God gives us time.

From the time you started, what kind of achievements can you say you have made so far?

Honestly, I have achieved a lot of success in every aspect. No success surpasses getting a living. I get a living out of writing. I get more respect from people. Even the people who do not know respect me once they get to know that I’m a scriptwriter.

What challenges have you encountered?

I’m not saying that I don’t face any challenges, but for anyone who knows what life is all about, you have to expect challenges. If you achieve success without facing any challenge, you should challenge yourself.
