Gunmen kill cop, injure, abduct others along Lagos- Ibadan expressway

Armed men suspected to be kidnappers on Friday killed a Police officer, injured another and kidnapped a traveler at the Dominion University end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The kidnappers were said to have reportedly blocked part of the expressway forcing vehicles to stop amidst sporadic shootings during which one of the trapped travelers was kidnapped.

On getting wind of the attack, men of the Oyo state Police command from the toll gate Police station were said to have mobilised into the scene to rescue the trapped travellers.

Sources said the armed kidnappers on sighting the policemen opened fire at them with the Policemen too engaging them in shoot out which lasted for minures.

Oyo state Police command in a reaction to the incident confirmed the death of a Policeman in the shoot out, and that the State Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Williams, has ordered full scale investigation into the incident with the view to unravel the circumstances surrounding the scenario and bring culprits to justice.

The Command in a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer,  (PPRO) SP Adewale Osifeso, CP Williams stressed further that the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) in charge of State Criminal Investigation Department is to lead the investigation.

“On Friday 28/10/2022 at about 1835HRS, Operatives of the Command attached to Toll-Gate Division received information about sporadic gunshots heard along the Dominion University end of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway”, it said 

The Command added, “In swift response to the above, the Divisional Police Officer led a team comprising; Anti-crime patrol operatives, tactical teams, Police Mobile men and local hunters for immediate rescue and further intervention.”

“During the process of prevailing and preventing further chaos from what was evidently an abduction scenario, an Officer attached to the Command paid the supreme price with one other badly injured and presently responding to treatment. So far, expended ammunition shells and (4) Four abandoned vehicles were retrieved at the scene”.
