Group urges Buhari to back Kwankwaso’s presidential ambition

A socio-political organisation under the aegis of Southern Mandate has urged former military Head of State and Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC),  General Muhammad Buhari (rtd),  not to contest the 2015 presidential election; but support the aspiration of Governor Rabiu  Kwankwaso of Kano state.

The group said its position was devoid of sentiments, adding: “Nigeria is an entity and we all own it. So, it’s all about who will take the country to the Promised   Land.”
National Coordinator of the group, Comrade Francis Ikonomwan, who stated this at a news briefing in Benin City recalled that Buhari  had  said after the  2011 poll that  he won’t contest future election; and expressed hope that retired General “will hold on to his words.”
Ikonomwan said the group’s appeal became necessary owing to the political track records of the Kano governor, noting that his candidacy will no doubt puts the APC in vantage position to take over power at the centre.

“It’s very normal to see many aspirants in elective positions. But I want to state that Nigerians are now more politically conscious. They are looking at aspirants, candidates with political antecedents, clout, credibility and integrity.
“And this is why we are rooting for Engr. Rabiu Kwankwaso because he has a national appeal, he is not seen as religious bigots or tribalistic.
“More so, since he belongs to the younger generation, he will be able to attract the youths. This is unlike our general who is 72years already.”
Continuing, it berated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)-led federal government over what it described as visionless and clueless.
“The East West road that is even in President Jonathan’s backyard is still a nightmare after five years since he took over the mantle of leadership.  So, change is all we need at this point in time.”
