Five pregnant women, others nabbed over alleged child trafficking in Anambra


The Anambra State police command, Wednesday, said they have arrested five pregnant women and others over alleged human trafficking.
According to the command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Haruna Muhammed, the suspect included, Ms Edna Nnadi, 37; Ms Ujunwa Nweke, 25; Ms Izuchukwu Uba, 24; Ms Chinaza Ibeh, 19; and Ms Peace Okon Effiong, 25.


Others were Ms Gift Collins, 20; and Ms Chimkaso Kingsley, 25; Ms Happiness Monday, 18; Ms Chioma Okonkwo,  25; and Ms Uchechukwu Nwankwo, 18.


Muhammed said the suspects were nabbed in a raid of one Ms Melvina Uju Uba’s house located opposite Nnamdi Azikiwe Orthopedic Teaching Hospital Oba in Idemili South LGA of Anambra State.


“The place was raided following credible information that teenage girls were being impregnated and the babies sold out by human traffickers. During the operation five newly born babies and three other children were rescued.
“The rescued children will be handed over to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Children’s and Women’s Affairs for proper care, while effort is being intensified to apprehend other accomplices in order to bring them to justice,” he added.
