FG develops ICT infrastructure to aid economy – Minister

Minister of Science and Technology Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu, has assured that the Muhammadu Buhari-led administration would intensify eff orts at using science and technology to diversify the nation’s economy. He stated this recently at the opening ceremony of the 4th International Workshop on the Application of ICT in Education, Healthcare and Agriculture, at a three-day workshop at the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) in Abuja. He said: “Th e APC-led administration is resolved to ensure that Nigeria moves, in the same direction with other countries of the world in utilising science, technology and innovation to drive a diversifi ed economy that will eff ectively utilise a dynamic ICT infrastructure to help transform Nigeria into a great nation that is peaceful and prosperous.

“To achieve this development chain in Nigeria, we will have to be committed in our drive in all areas of research and innovation, resulting in the deployment of ICT infrastructure in building indigenous capacity for the manufacture of ICT hardware, software and accessories. “It is expected that this development drive will help in the creation of an ICT databank that will support our new Science ,Technology and Innovation Road Map, 2017- 2030. Th is will be helpful in realising the noble objective of the Nigerian Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, 2017- 2020.”

In his goodwill message, the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, said: “Engaging technological skills in teacher education will go a long way in bridging the gap between those who can aff ord the cost of quality education and those who cannot. “It is hoped that the intensions of this project being launched will complement the ongoing eff orts in the various sectors particularly education. Some progresseshave been made in establishing Computer Based Tests for admission into educational institutions at various levels.

” In her welcome address, Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Belema Wakama, said “the workshop was symbolic at a time when most developing countries are confronted with economic recession triggered “Science, technology and innovation are the driving forces behind citizen engagements, job wealth creation and socio -economic development of any nation, and reshaping many aspects of world economies, societies and government,” she said. Th e Acting Secretary to the Government of Federation, Dr Habiba Lawal represented by the Permanent Secretary Dr Aminat M. B. Shamaki, in her goodwill message, said “Nigeria is committed to leverage ICT for sustainable development in sub-sectors of the economy and more.”
