FG designates Ebonyi as export processing zone

The Ebonyi state government has taken steps to facilitate the speedy take-off of Ebonyi as one of Nigeria’s Export Processing Zones, following its recent designation by the federal government.

Governor Dave Umahi stated this when he handed over the allocation letter of a parcel of land to the Nigeria Export Processing Zone Authority (NEPZA) for the project.

The governor, who handed over the letter to the Managing Director of the authority, Prof Adosoji Adasugba, in Abakaliki, Tuesday, expressed the hope that the project would stimulate growth and create employment opportunities.

Represented at the ceremony by his deputy, Dr Kelechi Igwe, the governor said his administration was expediting measures that would hasten efforts to develop the state.

Accordingly, the government said it was ready to explore available opportunities and cooperate with the federal government to facilitate the development strides of the state.

“We hope that the project when completed will stimulate the economy of the state and generate employment for our youths,” Umahi said and appealed to the federal government to step up efforts on the project for the benefit of the people.

Speaking at the presentation, the Managing Director of the NEPZA Adesugba said the Authority was saddled with the responsibility to establish, licence, regulate and operate highly efficient free zones by providing a highly competitive incentive scheme, excellent support facilities and service.

Further, he said the authority was committed to creating an enabling environment for export, manufacturing and other commercial activities to thrive.

He said NEPZA was attracted to Ebonyi by the member representing Abakalik /Izzi federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Chief Sylvester Ogbaga.
