Expert charges nursing mothers on improved exclusive breastfeeding in Yobe

Exclusive breastfeeding is said to have major nutrients pre-requisites to the health and survival of infants as it contains anti-bodies and quantities of fat, sugar, water and protein.

Idris Abdulsalam of the Action Le Farme (ACF), Working to Improve Nutrition in Northern Nigeria (WINNN) disclosed this Thursday while distributing empowerment machines to lactating mothers marking world breastfeeding week in Fika, Yobe State.

Abdulsalam further, said exclusive breastfeeding helps in strengthening immune system and enables it to life-threatening illnesses like pneumonia and diarrhea amongst other infections.

He therefore, advocated for the “need for sustained exclusive breastfeeding among the lactating mothers in the area based on it’s importance to child growth and development.”

In her keynote address, the Nutrition Officer, Aisha Ali, pledged to sensitise nursing mothers on the significance of exclusive breastfeeding which she, said 95 percent of breast milk is water while the remaining 5 percent constitutes vital food nutrients for children.

Speaking earlier, the caretaker chairman of Fika Local Government Area, Baba Abare, commended the ACF WINNN in its efforts towards Improving Nutrition among the children.

Abare, pledged to give the donour agency maximum cooperation to support reduce the child mortality in the local government. 

He also urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the machines donated.

Blueprint gathered a total of 36 rice milling machines and groundnut grinding machines were distributed to 125 nursing mothers in 12 groups for the three local government areas of Fika, Yunusari and Machina to boost their socioeconomic activities.

One of the beneficiaries, Hassana M. Baba, who spoke to journalists after the distribution, said the machines will reduce their succour and help in providing for their families.
