EU-UN equips girls on rights protection

 

The European Union (EU) and the United Nations (UN) have embarked on a new, global, multi-year initiative focused on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG) through its Spotlight Initiative.

The initiative beams its attention to moving it into the spotlight and placing it at the centre of efforts to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment, in line with the 2030 agenda for sustainable development.

Recently in Ebonyi state, the National Orientation Agency (NOA) with the support from the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative trained close to two hundred girls on their rights in the society.

The girls whose ages where from 10 to 18 years were taught on gender based violence (GBV), peer education, Female genital mutilation, FGM,  Sexual Reproductive Education, among others.

The training was a two- day program and it took place at Osbarn La Palm Hotels, Abakaliki and Darlingstar Hotels, Onueke, in Ezza South local government area of Ebonyi state.

At the programe, the girls showed great interest and promised to step down the teaching to their peers.

Speaking with Blueprint, some of the beneficiaries expressed pleasure in the teachings especially as it was glaring that some for the first time were privileged to attend such programme.
