Essay competition: Lawmaker rewards students with scholarships

For doing well in the annual essay writing competition for secondary schools in Cross River state, the Senator representing Cross River South, Bassey Out, has given scholarships to three students.
The students are Essien Patience Sunday of Margret Ekpo Secondary School who was the overall winner; Ojong Etita Blessed of Divine International Academy and  Solomon Asaje of Hope Waddell Secondary School.
Speaking, Otu said the annual competition was his little way of giving back to the society, and that the competition was organised for the purpose of promoting  academic  excellence among secondary school  students within his constituency.

He said it was important to invest in the nation’s education sector if its economy was to achieve growth, and that the scholarship would help the beneficiaries to study free in any tertiary institution of their choice in and outside the country.
In his remarks, Speaker of the Cross River state House of Assembly, Hon. Larry Odey, said he was impressed with what Senator was doing to uplift education, stressing that such competition had the ability of boosting the growth of education in the state.
Odey, who was represented by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Hon. Itaya Asuquo Nyong, pledged to partner with the lawmaker in order to sustain the essay writing competition.

He also commended the winners of the competition for making themselves available, but charged them not to relent in pursuing academic excellence in any scope of studies.
He said: “To me, capacity building starts with this one before us. This is the demonstration of capacity building in education sector; let all hands be on deck to build manpower through sustainable efforts of improved education sector for our children.”
