Don’t go back on strike, NANs beg ASUU

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANs) Thursday appealed to the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), not to go back on strike.

It called on federal government of Nigeria to settle the issue of payment shortfall raised by ASUU to prevent the union from returning to strike.

The NANs president, Comrade Asefon Dayo, made the call in Osogbo, Osun state, during a courtesy call on the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

He said the last strike has affected the students and the country at large, saying that the recent EndSARS protest would not have been that tough, if students were in school.

The student leader appealed to the federal government and the ASUU to settle the matter amicably so that the resumption announced by the union will not be reversed.

The student association also called on the federal government to reverse the recent increase in electricity tariff saying failure to reverse it will force the students to mobilize throughout the nation for protest.

The federal government, through the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, recently increased the electricity tariff by 50 percent.
He described the increment as insensitive, ill-time and unacceptable.

According to the student’s leader, subjecting Nigerians to high electricity tariff despite the hardship already posed by the Covid-19 pandemic is anti-people.

He warned the federal government not to further worsen situation of Nigerians when other nations of the world are making effort to ease the economic challenges in the face of Covid-19.

“The hike in the tariff coming barely two weeks after the same tariff was increased by over 100% is not only unacceptable but ridiculous.

“The over 100% hike in the tariff barely two months ago is condemnable and this new over 50% hike is totally unacceptable.

“NANS will fight against any hike in electricity tariff until prepaid meters are provided for every household at no extra cost to the consumers.

“NANS call on NERC to reverse this hike or face mass actions.”
