Delta speaker may resign today

There were strong indications yesterday that the Speaker of Delta State House of Assembly, Hon. Victor Ochei, would tender his resignation as Speaker today, as a result of impeachment plot against him.

The arrowheads of the impeachment moves also planned the suspension of Ochei and his deputy, Basil Ganagana, for initial and renewable period of six months.
However, the embattled speaker is said to be contacting the powers that be in the state to accept his resignation, to starve-off impeachment and suspension.
Ganagana, however, was still lobbying to retain his job as at yesterday, despite the groundswell of opposition against him from within and outside the House.

A senior cabinet member (name withheld) was reported to have led a delegation outside the country, last week, where the plot to sack the speaker was muted and perfected.
It was learnt that authorities in the state hired a top member of the state executive committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and an adviser to the governor, to execute the plot.

The duo recruited members of the House, except two representing Uvwie and Ughelli North Constituency 1 constituencies, Hon. Efe Ofobruku and Hon. Samuel Mariere, respectively, who were regarded as unrepentant allies of the speaker.

It was learnt that the arrowheads of the action secured the constitutional mandatory two-third majority of the members required to carry out the action, with nineteen members already appending their signatures to the impeachment document.

Although Ochei is being accused of being high-handed and not being transparent in the handling of the affairs of House, especially in the use of funds and execution of capital projects, it was learnt that his woes might not be unconnected with his gubernatorial ambition in the 2015 election.
It was gathered that his removal was targeted at whittling his influence ahead of the election.
Findings showed that arrowheads of the impeachment moves were of the opinion that Ochei was using the platform to strengthen his governorship ambition.
