Covid-19: VSF donates solar-powered boreholes, hand-wash stations, others to 3 schools in Akwa Ibom


Victim Support Fund (VSF), a covid-19 task force, Monday, donated 3 solar-powered boreholes including 12 hand wash stations, 6,000 packs of reusable facemasks.

Others are 15 pieces of 4litre hand sanitizers, 360 bottles of 500ml liquid hand wash and 15 cartons of bleach to three secondary schools in Akwa Ibom state.

The three benefiting schools were Methodist Secondary School Nto Ndang, Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikot Okobo, and Afaha Inang Secondary School Ikot Idem Udo in Obot Akara, Nsit Ubium, Onna Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Chairman of the VSF Emergency Task Force on COVID-19, Gen. TY Danjuma (rtd), represented by Mrs. Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji, while presenting the facilities to the benefiting schools at Methodist Secondary school, Obot Akara LGA, said it was part of the government efforts to outlive the Covid-19 pandemic life-span.

According to her, the task force on COVID-19 was an emergency response team inaugurated by its Chairman Gen. TY Danjuma (rtd), to provide palliative measures to displaced persons and the vulnerable, as well as provide institutional support to agencies supporting the national efforts to fight COVID-19.

She noted that the organisation was seriously concerned about the plight of students and teachers, especially in rural populated communities.

Akerele-Ogunsiji said VSF would continue to provide succor to vulnerable Nigerians and as well as institutional support to agencies involved in the fight against COVID-19.

“We want to see how we can contribute to the containment of the virus, by helping public schools in low income communities around the country, to observe the COVID-19 protocols,” the chairperson stated.

“We are now going round the country to donate to 54 secondary schools in 18 states across all the six geopolitical zones.

“For the South-west, we chose -Osun, Oyo and Ogun. For North-Central- Plateau, Nasarawa and Abuja. For the North-West- Kebbi, Kaduna and Jigawa( we were in Kaduna and Jigawa the upper week). last week we donated to Abia State, Anambra State and we left Enugu on Friday, and we arrived Akwa Ibom on Sunday.

“For the North-East we chose- Taraba State, Borno State and Bauchi State. For the South-south, were are in Akwa Ibom State today, we will be in Bayelsa State tomorrow and Edo State on Wednesday.

“We want to encourage you that the sustainability and the management of this facility is solely your responsibility, so, protect it. We will set up an independent evaluators who will be going around to check how the facilities are being managed. If you maintained this project and ensure sustainability, bigger may come back.

“At Victims Support Fund, we do not just want to account for the money, but to show the general public how we use the money.”

In his remark, Mr Etuk Umoh principal, of Methodist Secondary school Ndang Obot Akara on behalf of other benefiting schools thanked the task force for considering their schools  as beneficiaries.

He assured that they will use the facilities for the purpose they were  meant for as well as protect them from vandals.

“We want to assure you that the facility that you have provided here will be well preserved and protected,” he said.
