COVID-19: Obiano issues health advisory to Anambra residents

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra Thursday issued health advisory to residents of the state against the spread of coronavirus.

Obiano in a statement titled: “Anambra Coronavirus Disease (Covid-19) Public Health Advisory”, issued to journalists in Awka via e-mail Thursday, also banned residents from hugging and shaking hands with others.

The statement is being aired repeatedly by the state-owned radio, Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) since the initial announcement was made at 8am Thursday.

Obiano said all other pleasantries that involved physical contact of persons should be stopped till further notice.

The governor equally banned all public gatherings with effect from March 23, while people at markets were advised to wash their hands frequently with soap and water and allow it to air dry for at least 20 seconds.

“Use of hand sanitizers is strongly recommended if the hands are not visibly dirty, hand shaking, hugging and all other forms of contact salutation is strongly discouraged and distance of six feet should be maintained between customers and traders.

“Leadership of the markets are advised to buy infrared thermometer to test any cases of their member or customer falling sick in the market.

“All residents returning from countries and states with active COVID-19 cases must self-isolate for 14 days and contact the Anambra state Public Health Emergency Operation Center immediately (PHEOC).

“During self-isolation, they must take their temperatures twice daily,” he said.

Obiano further directed all state-owned tertiary institutions to suspend academic activities with effect from March 20, while primary and secondary schools would proceed on indefinite vacation from March 27 till further notice.

He said management of all schools in the state should provide hand wash stations at entrance of all schools and ensure that all students and visitors washed their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
