Covid-19: Mass protest looms if…- AWC

The All Workers Convergence (AWC) on Friday alerted of imminent mass protest should the federal government further extended the on-going lockdown or declare a state of emergency without provision for the well-being of the masses.

Its national coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emeziele, who raised the alarm in a statement in Ibadan, stressed that “with the present situation globally, the major issue of governance now must be on how to save lives.”

Emeziele said if the federal and state governments failed to prepare adequate provision for the masses, particularly the workers, they should prepare for a mass action by the Nigerian workers.

“Unfortunately, the situation at hand appears not to be abating and there is likelihood  that government might want to further extend the lock down or impose  a state of emergency as seen now canvassed by the Nigeria Governors’ Forum. Whichever way, the position of the Nigerian workers is that government should make adequate provisions for the economic wellbeing of the masses else a mass action against government,” he said.

Continuing, he said, “We, the Nigerian workers, therefore, call on labour movements in Nigeria, the civil society and the mass populace to prepare for mass resistance should government want to impose more sufferings on the land. We thus call for readiness for mass protest any moment from now as we watch events unfolds.”
