Carbide use on fruits, vegetables causes cancer, others– NFDAC

The National Drugs and food Control administration has warned fruits and vegetables sellers to henceforth desist from using Calcium carbide in facilitating ripening of their products which research showed as dangerous to human health and causes various ailments.
The Jigawa state Coordinator, Alhaji Abdurahma Lawal sounded the warning while interacting with newsmen in his office yesterday.
He said vegetables like tomatoes which were not ripe ,if calcium carbide was inserted in them will facilitate them to ripe with very fine colors and with spotless back, but was dangerous to human being when consumed.
Lawal stated that taking vegetable and fruits which calcium carbide was used to ripe causes various health implications such as brain problem, headache, sleeplessness , dizziness, mental confusion, vomiting, cerebral edema, and loss of memory among others.
He said such trend can change the natural test of the fruit orvegetables if such chemical was inserted into them adding that it wasto the detriment of public health.

Rising from an emergency meeting held at the conference room of Oyo state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology secretariat, Ibadan, the governing council ordered all academic staff to resume work by Monday, September 10.
Reading the communiqué issued at the end of the meeting jointly signed by the chairman of the council, Professor Moshood Tijani, chairman, council negotiation committee, Mr. Folorunsho Ayinla and Registrar/Secretary to council, Mr. A.O. Ojewole, the council ordered a register in the conference room for all academic staff to sign in while resuming back to work.
Professor Tijani said the register is to be opened from Monday, 10th September, 2018,” and that any member of staff who fails to comply with the directive should consider his job gone, saying, “at the emergency meeting of the Governing Council of The Oke-Ogun Polytechnic, Saki held today (yesterday) Thursday, 6th September, 2018 at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Education, Science and technology, Secretary Ibadan, the following decisions were taken:” “By the resolution of the Council, the activities of Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP), Saki Chapter is hereby suspended.
