Capacity building: NILDS flays FCT council bosses

The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), Friday, frowned at the absence of the chairmen of the six area councils in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), at a ended two-day capacity building workshop organised for 62 elected councillors in the territory.

The displeasure of the legislative institute on the conduct of the council chairmen was expressed by the Director General, Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, at the closing ceremony of the event.

According to him, absence of the Area Councils’ chairmen at the training workshop meant to be a pivotal model for elected councillors across the remaining 768 local government councils in the country was not a good sign.

“We are disappointed that all the chairmen are not here to partake in the training facilitated by a noble idea from them. We in NILDS, are not happy because there can’t be councillors without Chairmen just as there cannot be kings without subjects,” he said.

He, however, commended the 62 elected councillors across the six area councils for attending the workshop which according to him is very necessary for political players at the grassroots.

Sulaiman said, “There is need for the bulk of the country’s population who live in the rural areas to benefit from dividends of democracy at the grassroots level.”

The elected Councillors across the 62 wards in the six area councils were led into the two-day training by the Chairman of their forum, Hon Abdulkadir Sidi Ali.
