Assent to Assembly autonomy makes Buhari a democrat – Hassan

Jos President, Muhammadu Buhari, has been described as an “ardent democrat,” whose recent actions are aimed at strengthening Nigeria, legislature and judicial and ensuring fiscal independence.
Ibrahim Baba Hassan, who stated this in Jos, the Plateau State capital, was reacting to President Buhari’s assent to the amended Section 121 of the 1999 Constitution, which gave the state assemblies and judiciary fiscal independence.
Hassan, a third term member and also an erstwhile Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, said such assent “has now made the legislature a true an independent arm of the government.” Hassan said besides the financial independence to the legislatures and judiciaries, the signing of the Not-Too-To-Run bill, and none interference of the President in the National Assembly matters were further indications that he is a true democrat.
“Several attempts were made in the past but they all failed to secure state legislatures financial independence because the National Assembly would passed it but at the state level some governors then we’re not comfortable and had not allowed their lawmakers to passed the bill, which made the efforts not to get the minimum requirement of 2/3 majority”, he said.
Hassan commended the present set of governors and all the 36 Houses of Assembly for making yet another democratic history.
