Anambra: police refund N500,000 extorted from unnamed citizen, prosecute misconduct officers


The Anambra State police command, Wednesday, said they have returned a total of N500,000 some “unprofessional” officers extorted from unnamed citizen of the state.
The Command in a statement signed by the police public relations officer (PPRO), DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, explained that the state police Commissioner, Mr Monday Bala Kuryas, has equally moved to prosecute the ‘extortionists’ officers.


“The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, CP Monday Bala Kuryas, fsi has expressed his total aversion to unprofessionalism and other extortionist tendencies amongst some Police personnel in the Command. The CP stated this today, 21st April, 2021 following a petition alleging the extortion of the sum of Five Hundred Thousand Naira (#500,000) from a citizen by some men of the Command.


“Investigations, ordered by the CP, into the case led to the swift identification and arrest of the personnel involved. The sum of N500,000 extorted from the victim was also recovered intact and returned to him and the officers charged with misconduct in line with extant disciplinary procedure of the Force,” he added. 
The PPRO added that the commissioner has resolved to ‘stamp out extortionist tendencies’ amongst some personnel of the Command, and appealed to the citizens to report any misconduct by personnel of the Command to him through the ’X’ Squad or the Public Complaints Bureau (PCB), or call 112, 07039194332 or 08039334002 as utmost confidentiality of information would be maintained.
