Aggrieved monarchs reject withdrawal of lawsuit against Akwa Ibom government

The 13 aggrieved paramount rulers in Akwa Ibom state have rejected an outright withdrawal of lawsuit they instituted against government over the controversial Traditional Rulers Law in the state.

Governor Umo Eno, had on October 17, met with the royal fathers and asked them to withdraw the matter from court for settlement.

Addressing a press conference in Uyo, Tuesday, one of the lead counsels to the plaintiffs (Paramount Rulers), Jumbo Udom, noted that the plaintiffs will not accept the full withdrawal of the case form court.

Udom noted that defendants(Akwa Ibom government) sought for outright withdrawal of the case from court and the motion did not go down well with the plaintiffs.

He noted that the motion of leave of the Court sought by his clients to explore the peaceful settlement was enough for Defendants to accept.

The plaintiff’s counsel accused the counsel to the defendant, the state Attorney General, Uko Udom (SAN), “of vehemently opposing plaintiffs’ application for leave to settle the matter and for adjournment sine die.”

Udom insisted that the only condition for settlement is outright withdrawal of the case; otherwise, the defendants are prepared for the case to proceed.
