After aiding 665gm of cannabis sativa, man lands in jail

 

Justice Mashkur Salisu of a federal high court sitting in Osogbo, Osun state, has sentenced a man, Akintayo Taofeek, to seven months imprisonment for aiding 665gm of cannabis sativa.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), dragged Taofeek to the court for aiding one Saheed Apala, in taking delivery of 665gm of cannabis sativa, an offence punishable under the law.

The prosecutor, Olufemi Ijimakin, alleged that the defendant committed the purported crime in October 2023.

The charge sheet reads: “That you, Akintayo Taofeek, Male, Adult, Nigerian, on or about the 28 days of October 2023 at Odo Ori park, Iwo, Osun State within the Territorial jurisdiction of this Honorable Court without lawful authority knowingly aided one “Saheed Apala” who is still at large in taking delivery of 650 grams of cannabis sativa, a narcotic drug similar to cocaine, heroin, LSD e.t.c and thereby committed offenses contrary to and punishable under section 14 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

“That you, Akintayo Taofeek, Male, Adult, Nigerian, on or about the 28th day of October 2023 at Odo Ori park, Iwo, Osun State within the territorial jurisdiction of this Honorable Court without lawful authority knowingly aided one “Saheed Apala” in taking delivery of 1gramses of Methamphetamine, a psychotropic drug similar to cocaine, heroin, LSD e.t.c and thereby committed offense contrary to and punishable under section 14 (b) of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, Cap N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.”

The defendant admitted guilty of the crime and his counsel, Alfred Adegoke, prayed the court to be lenient with him, saying that ignorance led him to the crime.

Adegoke prayed the court to consider the six children who are depending on the convict, saying that he is a first offender.

Justice Salisu thereby sentenced the convict to seven months imprisonment.
