40-year-old lawmaker elected Imo Speaker

A new speaker has been elected for the Imo State House of Assembly.

He is Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, the immediate past Transition Committee chairman of Ihitte Uboma local government area.

Olemgbe, a first timer was nominated by Vitalis Azodo of Ideato South State constituency and the nomination was seconded by Hon Ugochukwu Obodo from Owerri Municipal constituency.

When no further nominations were made, the clerk of the house, Barr Chinelo Emeghara, ordered for voting and he was returned unopposed.

The 9th house had revoked the standing rule of allowing only ranking members to aspire to the position of speaker.

This made Olemgbe, a first timer to clinch the position zoned to Imo North, also known as Okigwe zone.

Rt. Hon. Chyna Amarachi Iwuanyanwu of Nwangele State constituency, a veteran lawmaker, was also returned as deputy speaker.

In his acceptance speech, the new speaker promised to work in synergy with the executive to deliver the dividends of democracy.
