No fewer than 30 women have been scheduled for Vesico Vaginal Fistula (VVF) surgeries in Niger state, under the sponsorship of RAISE foundation founded by wife of Niger state governor, Dr. Amina Sani Bello.
The Press Secretary to the governor’s wife, Aisha Wakaso, stated this in a statement issued in Minna yesterday, adding that the treatment of the women had started in Bida area of the state.
She said that the governor’s wife has declared opened a surgery camp in Bida with a charge for more enlightenment on causes of VVF condition.
Amina, according to the statement, stressed the need for people to be aware of the causes of VVF, which would go a long way in eliminating it from the society, arguing that increased education and sensitisation would free Nigeria from VVF cases.
She described prolonged labour as a major cause of VVF in women, adding that instead of going to the Primary Health Care Centers close to them, the local people try to deliver at home leading to complications.
“Eventually, when they are taken to the hospital, they might have lost the child and then developed the condition”, she said.
The governor’s wife said that her Foundation has commenced plans to set up a Fistula Center that would serve the North Central, adding that presently there was none in the zone
