2023: Enugu police assure peaceful, successful polls

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Police Command, ACP Hope Isiani, has assured of the preparedness of the force to ensure a peaceful and successful conduct of the 2023 polls in the state.

Isiani who disclosed this when the National Coordinator of Women Situation Room Nigeria (WSRN), Prof. Joy Onyesoh visited her office weekend, said that the state command has trained between 300 to 500 female police officers to augment their male counterparts to ensure that they maintained peace and order during the forthcoming polls.

The ACP said that the female personnel were adequately trained to work alongside the males for the forthcoming elections.

According to her, the training of female personnel is still ongoing to make them ready to combat insecurity during and after the election.

“We train them to ensure that the women are actively involved in checking crimes during the forthcoming elections,” she said.

She, however, said that the training of the female officer predates the preparations for the elections because the Force has lost many men to hoodlums, the unknown gunmen in recent time.

“We are not pretending that we have been losing men to insecurity occasioned by unknown gunmen in recent time and this is why we are training our femalefolk to be part of the security architecture.”

She said that to ensure adequate security of lives and property during the forthcoming elections, the Command is making sure that all hands were on deck.

“We are doing our best to ensure that the state is stable.  All hands are on deck to check insecurity in the state,” she said.

Speaking earlier, the National Coordinator of WSRN, Prof. Onyesoh, who was on a peace tour of some states ahead of the forthcoming polls said that they were meeting with critical stakeholders to ensure peaceful and  credible polls.  “We sensitise and build capacity.  We try to collaborate and meet with critical stakeholders for the coming election,” she said.

Onyesoh also said that they would deploy female observers on issue of violence who would report to the Situation Room from  the election scene especially as it concerned women.
