2 docked over unlawful possession, display of weapons

Two men, Idowu Peter and Muyideen Bakare have appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court over alleged unlawful possession and display of offensive weapons.

Twenty-year-old Peter and Bakare, aged 42, whose addresses were not provided, are facing charges of conspiracy, breach of the peace, unlawful display of arms and membership of an unlawful society.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the Prosecutor, Inspector Mojirade Edeme, the defendants and others still at large committed the offences on June 1 on Ikorodu Road, Lagos.

Edeme said the defendants, belonged to an unlawful society called ” Eiye confraternity” and conducted themselves in a manner likely to breach the peace by displaying dangerous weapons  in public.

“The defendants stormed the community with cutlasses, knives, axes, broken bottles, sticks and charms, and started attacking the inhabitants of the Ikorodu.

“The residents alerted the police who arrived at the scene and arrested the defendants while the others escaped. Some of the weapons were recovered,” the prosecutor said.

The alleged offences contravene Sections 42, 51, 168 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs O. A. Aderibigbe, released the defendants on bail in the sum of N500,000 each with one surety each in like sum.

Aderibigbe said the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidences of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos state government.

She adjourned the case until August 19 for mention.
