10th House: Group faults APC on choice of Abbas, backs Betara for speaker

A coalition of support groups under the United Youth Initiative For Good Governance (UYIFGG) has backed the House Committee Chairman on Appropriations, Rt Hon Mukhtar Aliyu Batara for the position of Speaker of the 10th National Assembly.

The group, which deferred with the All Progressives Congress (APC) on its choice of Hon. Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker, said Betara is a better option who will unite the House and ensure cordial relationship with the executive.

The groups urged the ruling party to waive aside sentiments and do the needful by choosing a candidate that can deliver on the campaign promises of the party, stressing that such a candidate is no other than the present House Committee Chairman on Appropriations.

A statement on behalf of the group, which was issued by its Coordinator, Hon. Abba Bukar Abba Masta and spokesman, Comrade Nwokoma Messiah, said Betara represents the youth who are a strong factor that helped the party emerge victorious. It said alienating them at this critical period when they have all pitched their tent under Hon. Aliyu Betara will be the height of insensitivity on their demand.

“Aside the Nigerian youths, all Nigerians are behind the candidacy of Rt Hon Mukhtar Aliyu Betara and we believe the ruling party as well as the opposition parties in the Green Chamber is behind him because it is their expectations that with him as Speaker of the House, there will be positive change and the country at the end of the day will be better off for it.

“We are confident that Betara has the ability to carry all lawmakers along in spite of political and party differences because a lot of new members will be coming into the house. Therefore, Hon Betara will be a perfect fit as the country’s next speaker because of his long legislative experience,” the statement added.
