FEC approves N291.73m aviation equipment, N646m for FCT water, fire suits


The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved N291.73 million for the procurement of Memory Access Retrieval System to enhance aviation safety in the country. 

This was disclosed by the Minister of State for Aviation Mr Hadi Sirika while addressing State House correspondents at the end of the weekly FEC meeting chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the State House in Abuja. 

“Safety and security is the main trust of President Muhammadu Buhari government in aviation. The new system will enhance our laboratory in accident investigation. It is a requirement of International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) in the standard practices and applicable by local laws,” he said. 

The minister said investigations were ongoing on the fire incident at the Sam Mbakwe Airport in Owerri, Imo state, and that the report would be made available to the public afterwards.

Also speaking, Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Mr Mohammed Musa Bello said the council also approved procurement of water treatment and field materials for the FCT Water Board at the sum of  N360 million.

He said the council also approved purchase of 500 units of firemen suits at N286 million for the FCT Fire Service for emergency management. 

The Minister of Budget and National Planning Mr Udoma Udo Udoma said the council approved two contracts for the N-Power Build Programme of the National Social Investment Programme (NSIP) in order to impart skills on young non-graduates.

He said the N-Power Build Programme is a non-graduate programme that seeks to deliver accelerated training and certificated skills to 75,000 Nigerians between the ages of 18 and 35. 

“It aims to build a high crop of highly competent and skilled workforce of technicians, artisans and service professionals, who will be trained and tooled and transitioned annually to take up jobs as electrical installation technicians, plumbing and pipe fitting installers, masons, carpentry and gentry experts, welders, fabricators, professional painters, building technicians and so on. 

“The focus has so far been zone by zone. Today, the contract for the Southeast zone of Nigeria was awarded to Hitech Investment Ltd at the sum of N122.8 million. It covers all the states in the Southeast. The one for the Northwest zone was awarded to Noble Ventures Limited in the sum of N145.1 million and it covers all the states in the Northwest,” he said.
