Environmental violators ‘ll face sanctions- NESREA


The National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) has cautioned every erring facilities and violators of environmental regulations to sit up or face sanctions.

The newly appointed Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NESREA, Professor Aliyu Jauro, made this known during a press briefing on Tuesday at the agency in Abuja, adding that the era when facilities acted with impunity was over.

He said the lapses and inefficiencies that characterised the previous Act has been addressed to enable the realization of its mandate.

Professor Jauro told journalists that all the ambiguities and inconsistences that impedes smooth running of the Agency has been removed and now the agency is in poised to effectively carry out compliance monitoring and enforcement in the industries as well as the built environment.

He therefore called on members of the public to familiarise themselves with environmental laws, regulations, guidelines, policies and the provisions of international environmental agreements to which NESREA is a signatory.

Jauro stated that to ensure environmentally sound disposal of waste, solid, liquid and gaseous, stakeholders must obtain relevant permits, licenses, clearance, to obtain environmental impact statement and certificates from the Federal Ministry of Environment, before mobilising to sites and also adhere to the environmental Audit cycles.
