Young lawyers tasked on writing skills to sustain legal education

A group of legal practitioners in Abuja have restated need for writing skills, saying it is key to sustaining legal education and the profession.

They hinged their submissions on the importance of quality service delivery to clients and society.

The group gave the charge in Abuja while unveiling a competition in Abuja tagged: “The Henry Barnabas Ehi essay competition”.

The competition was put together in honour of Henry Barnabas Ehi, the former publicity secretary of the NBA branch as a way of sharpening the writing skills of young lawyers of between one and seven years post-call experience as well as those currently enrolled in the Nigerian Law School.

The essay competition, which is a consensus of the ‘Easyread legal’ is in collaboration with LF Legal and Maxon and Prime Legal the Nigerian bar association, Bwari branch is aimed at promoting legal education in the country.

At the official unveiling ceremony, one of the organisers Caleb Oboagwina, Founder Easy Read Legal who addressed the audience said the not less than 2500 words essay is targeted at young lawyers to enhance legal writing.

The competition with a price tag of between N250,000 and N100,000 for winners, was designed to empower lawyers and to make them see writing as lucrative.

Making a remark, the honouree Barnabas Ehi said: “I feel honoured to be part of this. It has always been part of my philosophy to revive fading culture of reading, research and writing among lawyers.”

Also speaking for the Bwari branch of the NBA, Mr Paul Daudu noted: “This idea is brilliant and a landmark. it will aid both critical thinking and analytical writing.”
