‘Why Taraba assembly’s deputy speaker was impeached’

The Taraba state House of Assembly Deputy Speaker Taraba, Hon Muhamed Danladi Gwampo, was Monday impeached by his colleagues for allegedly being incompetent.

The deputy speaker was immediately replaced by the majority leader Charles Maijankai, while a former majority leader in the 8th assembly, Albaso Kunini, was elected the substantive majority leader.

In a motion moved by the member representing Lau state constituency, Albaso Kunini, the house resolved that Gwampo lacks the capacity to function as a presiding officer, and therefore should not have been elected deputy speaker in the first place.

Speaking later, the newly elected deputy speaker, Charles Maijankai, promised not to betray the confidence repose on him by the members, adding that he would work hard and proficiently to meet the yearnings of his colleagues and the state as a whole.

Similarly, the new majority leader Kunini pledged to discharge his duties according to the tenents of the Nigeria constitution and the rules of the house.

Meanwhile, the impeached deputy speaker, Gwampo, declined to speak on his impeachment when pressed to do so.
