What will Harry Maguire bring to Manchester United?

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Leicester City defender Harry Maguire for a fee of £80m, a world record for a defender. The Englishman has been on the Red Devils radar for two seasons, and was even sought after by David Moyes while playing for Hull City back in 2013. It is an astronomical fee for England’s best center back, but what could he bring to the United defence?
Comically nicknamed “Slabhead”, Maguire is also a full England international, making 20 appearances for the Three Lions and scoring once. He joined Leicester in 2013 and was a regular in his time, making 69 League appearances and scoring five goals, including the equalizer against United’s fierce rivals Liverpool in a 1-1 draw which contributed to the Reds missing out on the Premier League title. That alone makes him a hero in the eyes of most United fans.
United’s defence is a key reason why they finished sixth last season, shipping in 54 goals which featured a lot of embarrassing defeats. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men missed out on Champions League football in the process, and with right Aaron Wan Bissaka already brought in, it is clear that Ole has made strengthening his defence a priority. United’s best defender last season was Victor Lindelof, and while Eric Bailly is also solid at the back, he (as well as Marcos Rojo) has struggled a lot with injuries since signing, and Chris Smalling and Phil Jones are far from capable.
Victor Lindelof played more minutes (2657) than Maguire (2327) in all competitions. Bailly and Rojo on the other hand played less than 1000 minutes combined. So how do they compare defensively?
Maguire is the strongest aerially, winning 69% of his duels. Rojo’s win percentage was 100, but he player way less minutes as well as Bailly.
When it comes to fouling, Smalling was the most reckless followed by Rojo, averaging 1.04 fouls per game.
Smalling blocked the most shots per 90 followed by Rojo and Maguire. But when it comes to interceptions, Maguire tops the charts with 6.03 per game, with Jones second on 5.82. Bar lindelof United lacked a consistent performer as well as a leader in defence, and Maguire came out on top in the crucial department which includes interceptions, aerial prowess and general availability. He won 78% of his duels in the 2018-19 season, a better success rate than any of the 205 other players to be involved in 50+ aerial duels in the league, including last season player of the year and the league’s best defender, Virgil Van Dijk.
With regards to passing, Maguire averaged the most passes per 90 with 56.5, compared to the lowest posted by Smalling with 33. His average pass length was the longest, and he hit the most long passes per 90 as well with the exception of Rojo, who once again played fewer minutes. Interestingly, Phil Jones came out on top in terms of pass accuracy, followed by Victor Lindelof.
In Maguire, United are hoping to have found a more consistent performer, who will partner Lindelof at the heart of the defence. The Swede is well known for his valuable on ball qualities, but the 24 year old can’t do it all alone.
The United faithful feel the money could have been spent on someone else. Is that true? Maybe. But Maguire is well proven in the Premier League, and is a sound investment considering his underlying performance in several key areas compared to United’s current crop.
