We can’t have LG sole administrators in a democracy, IPAC tells Kebbi government

The Inter Party Advisory Council of Nigeria (IPAC) has described the appointment of sole administrators for local governments in Kebbi state as undemocratic under civilian rule because of its moral implications.

IPAC state chairman who is also the chairman of the Allied People’s Movement (APM), Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad, made their feelings known during an advocacy visit to the state House of Assembly in Birnin Kebbi, Tuesday.

He said in spite of the existence of  law which empowers the governor to appoint sole administrators to steer the affairs of local governments, there is also the moral question for such action  under democratic setting which emphasises freedom of choice among the people for those to govern them.

The IPAC chairman wondered why the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC) failed to conduct elections into local government councils before the expiration of the tenure of the immediate past chairmen in consonance with the law establishing the Commission.

He told the speaker about their intent to seek an amendment to the law empowering the governor to appoint sole administrators for LGs to restore democratic tenets.

Alhaji Ibrahim Muhammad made it clear that as his personal opinion, he preferred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take over the conduct of local government elections from state governments in the interest of fairness and justice.

He commended the assembly for maintaining harmonious working relationship with the executive arm unlike what obtains in some states having rancour.
