Tribute to Bomai, the NYSC martyr

It is the cause, not the death, that makes the martyr.
~Napoleon Bonaparte

My eyes well with tears whenever I remember your mother’s words of adieu!.
Surely, you were shoot and killed, but the spirit of your helpless soul remains intact with ours.

Suleiman Yusuf Bomai (Walid), the serving corps member from Yobe state that was killed along Lokoja-Abuja highway on December 21, 2020, by kidnappers on his way back from NYSC Orientation Camp in Osun state. He was a graduate of the Department of English Language, Federal University Gashua. A great ally with heart of serving community through a socio-mutual interaction, the memories and your achievements can never be erased in our hearts.

The Alumni of FECOET Demonstration Secondary School Potiskum lost their amiable president, the state footballers lost their skilled one in the arena, our fellow grammarian lost their hardworking comrade.

His death was indeed a loss not only to his parents, friends, and town, but also to the whole Yobe state and the nation at large.

On receiving the tragic news of his death, we turned on our two side ears and listened to the national dailies, if government at both state and federal levels would mourn with and share this difficult time but unfortunately they did not.

We learnt that there are many heroes that make history but the most honourable is one who died in serving his state.

As Prophet Muhammad (SAW) clearly said in the hadith, a person who died in securing (serving) his mother land is nothing but a martyr.

Dishonouring Bomai’s death is simply a misinterpretation to our national anthem; his labour as our hero is likely to pass in vain.

Goodnight brother!

Ali Tijjani Hassan,
Potiskum, Yobe state
