Protect Nigerian legislature as symbol of democracy, CNA urges stakeholders

Clerk of the National Assembly, Amos Ojo, has urged Nigerians, especially those in the political space to protect the legislature, which he said, is the symbol of democracy.

Speaking during a training workshop for staff members of the House of Representatives in Abuja Tuesday, Ojo said, “The legislature is the first among the three arms of government – the legislature, executive, and the judiciary. These arms are characterised by the principle of separation of powers as each is supposed to be independent of the other.

“It would not be out of place for me to use this occasion to remind us that the legislature is the symbol of democracy all over the world. It is therefore pertinent and incumbent on all lovers of democracy to ensure that this institution is protected. One of the ways of doing this is adequate training of staff. As I said at one of the training programmes organised for staff, we cannot continue to do things in the same way and expect to achieve different results”.

Also in his remarks, Clerk of the House of Representatives, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, recalled that previous National Assembly management teams since 2010 had presented staff with Codes of Ethics through workshops or booklets directed at guiding the work ethics and behavioural conduct.

“The essence was to bring about forthrightness in the conduct of the National Assembly staff and to ensure optimum service output and serve as a means of enlightenment and constant reminder of staff’s oath of office as civil servants,” he stated.
