Prison decongestion: FCT corrections train 28 court orderlies, record clerks

The Nigeria Correctional Service (NCS) Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command Wednesday begun a 5-day intensive  training of court orderlies and record clerks to enhance their knowledge in the documentation and reporting of court processes.

The training began with the first set comprising 28 personnel, which are expected to be posted to different courts within the FCT after the training.

Speaking at the flag-off of the training at the Command Hall in Gwagwalada, the Controller of Corrections FCT command, Abdul-Rahman Maiyaki, said the officers would be responsible for curbing congestion in the correctional  facilities by ensuring that communication between the courts and the custodial centres are not breached.

He said the training, which draws resource persons from the FCT high court, the NBA as well as veteran correctional officers, was geared towards “enriching the knowledge base of the correctional service officers in the documentation and reporting of court processes and discrepancies that may hinder the smooth dispensation of justice.”

” This is in line with the Controller General of Nigerian Correctional service, Ahmed Ja’afaru’s goal of building synergy and ensuring sustained decongestion of the custodial centres,” Mayaki said.

The Controller encouraged the staff to be good ambassadors of the service and shun all forms of irregularities that may arise upon the discharge  of their duties.
