Policeman kills bus driver in Niger

A police sergeant has killed a J5 bus driver, whose name has not been identified, at a check point on Tegina-Lagos Road near Mashegu local government area of Niger state.
The incident was said to have happened at the weekend in which bus’s conductor was also critically injured.
The circumstances behind the shooting was not immediately known, but witness account said it was an argument over N50 extortion while the police had dismissed such insinuation insisting that reason for the killing was yet to be establish.
The witness account stated that the police sergeant had demanded for N100, but the driver pleaded for N50 and offered same before the policeman opened fire.
The policeman, whose name was given as Isah Mohammed, was said to have insisted on the balance of N50, but the deceased driver said he could only part with what he had already offered and walked towards his vehicle.
This was said to have angered the policeman who cocked and fired at the driver, killing him instantly, while the conductor sustained a fracture in the leg.
Niger state Police Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bala Elkana, who confirmed the incident, said the policeman had been arrested and detained, adding that it was not true that there was argument over money before the incident.
Elkana said the Commissioner of Police, Zubairu Muazu Abubakar, had ordered an investigation into the incident.
