On governors’ second year in office

Governors in most of the 36 states of the federation marked two years out of their four years tenure on Saturday, May 29. However many of them fall short in the practice of true democratic principles and ethos particularly in the delivery of the dividends to their people.

Most of the governors concentrate on building infrastructure to the detriment of human capital development. They have refused to create employment opportunities for our teeming youths who contributed largely during their election brouhaha; some of them were misused as political thugs but after winning the elections they were dumped without being engaged in any productive venture.

The recent report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on the high rate of unemployed youths in all states of the federation is quite alarming as it obviously accounts for the poor state of the nation’s economy and rising insecurity. These unemployed youths engage in many criminal activities ranging from insurgency, kidnapping, banditry, stealing, among other vices.

Furthermore, many state workers are being denied the implementation of the new national minimum wage; their wages are not paid appropriately, no allowances and welfare packages that can boost to their morale. Those of them who have retired are not paid their pension and gratuities.

I, therefore, advise the Nigerian governors to endeavour to fulfil their campaign promises and adhere to the tenets of democracy. May Almighty Allah continue to be your Shepherd in the meet of your mandate.
