Old Niger bridge rehabilitation 78% complete – FG

Federal Controller of Works in Anambra state, Mr. Innocent Alumonah, has said that the rehabilitation of the 53-year- old Niger Bridge is at 78 per cent completion.
He, however, noted with the availability of funds, the rehabilitation work on the bridge would be completed before the end of December.

Alumonah spoke just as the Director, Highways (Bridges and Design) in the Ministry, Engr. Adetokunbo Sogbesan, reiterated the commitment of the federal government to the completion of the project.

The duo spoke recently during the media tour to the project site in Asaba, Delta state.

Alumonah said: “You can agree with me that the bridge is ageing and experiencing heavy traffic in addition to the axle loads going through it on daily basis.

“It is on this premise that the Federal Government decided to award contract for the reinforcement of the bridge to bring it back to full functionality and extend its lifespan”.

Also, Sogbesan, who represented the Power, Works and Housing Minister, Mr. Raji Fashola, on the tour, assured that the bridge would not collapse under the present administration.

To this end, he said that resources would be mobilised to prevent the bridge from collapsing, adding that the FG was mindful of the fact that the bridge remains the vital East-West link, which has enhanced both the socio-political and economic activities of the country.
