NYSC to bridge foreign students’ mobilisation gap

As part of efforts to solve the problem of mobilising unqualified foreign graduates for service, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has commenced process of bridging communication gaps with foreign corps producing institutions in Africa by holding stakeholders meeting with managements of the concerned institutions.

The meeting held in Abuja Thursday had representatives’ from159 institutions across Africa.

Addressing the delegates, the NYSC Director General, Brigadier General, Shuaibu Ibrahim said the meeting is taking place as a deliberate step to bridge communication gap between NYSC and tertiary educational institutions in Africa.

“This is because the gap has brought about challenges which constitute impediments to the mobilisation process, especially in recent times. It is therefore, aimed at examining those challenges with a view to proffering lasting solutions. In particular, we seek the best for our dear country by ensuring that only truly qualified graduates are mobilised for national service and eventually involved in our socioeconomic endeavors.

“We have long established the tradition of reviewing our performance in the mobilisation process together with stakeholders, including Nigerian-based Corps Producing Institutions and Regulatory Bodies such as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, National Universities Commission and the National Board for Technical Education.

“During such, strategies are evolved for better outcomes. In the same vein, this programme will provide avenue for scrutiny of issues that are peculiar to the mobilisation of foreign trained graduates with a view to sensitising the key players on compliance with laid down regulations,” he said.

The director, Corps Mobilisation, Mrs Ukonu Nnenna said over the years, there have been piles of lapses on the part of foreign Corps Producing Institutions occasioned by communication gap between the institutions and the NYSC management.

“I have no doubt that this meeting is the best forum to discuss such lapses in order to achieve a more harmonious working relationship which will bring about development in our country and positive impact on other youths,” she said.
