The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said it will emback on 24 hours surveillance of public infrastructure and emergency situation in the country, even as it commenced a 3-day training for the newly promoted 39 commandants of the corps.

The 3-day training on Managerial Leadership and Capacity Building is holding from Wednesday July 3 to Friday July 5 at the headquarters of the NSCDC in Abuja.

While declaring the workshop open, Commandant General of the NSCDC, Abdullahi Gana Muhammad, charged the participants to use the opportunity to learn the necessary skills required to live up to the challenges of their mandates.

Represented at the occasion by his Deputy Commandant General in charge of operations, Hilary Kelechi Madu, said the training is coming at the right time in view of the spate of insecurity witnessed across the country.

He said: “Leadership is the act of guidance, management, control and security of everything entrusted in your care. It is an administrative skill to lead others in achieving the objective of an organization. One of the qualities of being a good leader is to have passion for your duties. Therefore, this workshop is very apt at this time; considering the insecurity in the country.

“Part of our vision and mission in the NSCDC is to maintain 24-hrs surveillance to prevent the destruction of infrastructure, helping agencies in disaster management during period of emergency. In fact, the three days won’t even be enough for the experts to discuss everything, but I am sure that only the best were selected for this workshop and they are capable of using three days to say what they can say in weeks.

“As newly promoted commandants, the workshop will sharpen your minds to be ready for the tasks ahead. You are expected to work towards achieving the vision and mission of the agency, which is to provide safety to Nigerians. You are expected to display high sense of professionalism in the discharge of your duties by putting into use the knowledge you will acquire from the training.”

Also speaking, one of the consultants for the training and the MD/ CEO of Muregi Associates, Dr Hussaini Muhammed, said security is important in the lives of Nigerians and expressed confidence that the participants will imbibe the knowledge garnered from the workshop in the discharge of their duties.

“The purpose of the 3-day workshop is to equip the participants with the perquisite skills required in the performance of their duties. Security is everybody’s business and I have no doubt that they will replicate what they will learn in the course of the training wherever they may be posted,” he said.
