NLC urges members to educate themselves

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT council  has said that unionists must educate themselves adequately so as to be effective in carrying out their mandate to protect workers.
Chairman of the council, Comrade Abdullahi Yahaya while speaking at end of this year’s annual “Rain School” organized by the NLC, said with continued education, labour leaders can function well.
According to him “Education in the labour movement is key; we are living in an ever changing work environment which means that workers should learn about policies and how they will affect them even before they become operational.
He said “Employers are increasingly adopting measures that are anti-workers but it is our duty to continually seek relevant knowledge in order to counter these measures and ensure that they do not flout our labour laws and that of the International Labour Organisation,”.
The labour leader further tasked the participants, who are mainly union leaders in work places  in Abuja, to make judicious use of workers’ contributions into causes that add value to the ordinary worker as well as the Nigerian masses.
According to him, for the Country to witness meaningful development that would touch each and every citizens, workers must engage in active politics to occupy sensitive key positions.
“Workers need to own the socialist and labour parties. They must make sacrifices by way of funding their own parties so that they can have a say on manifestoes and who gets to represent them.”
