Nigerian Legion chairman lauds COAS, FG over legionnaires’ global exposure

The National Chairman, Nigeria Legion,  Major-General Abdulmalik Jibril (rtd), Wednesday, commended the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya and President Muhammadu Buhari, for creating opportunities for legionnaires to have exposure to foreign special trainings.

Jubril noted that the training gave legionnaires the physical accessibility to their foreign veterans to share their experiences in the United States.

 A statement issued in Abuja by Mr. Henry David of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, quoted Jubril commenting on the five-day training for some legionnaires at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs at Michigan, USA, recently.

He said: “Among the enactment objectives of the legion are to maintain membership of International World War Veteran Organizations striving for world peace, disarmament, and détente and other non-Governmental organisations with similar aims and objects.”

Jubril added that the international exposure will reposition the Nigeria Legion to engage in suitable undertakings for the training, employment and settlement of ex-servicemen and the education of their children.

Also, the Director of Corporate Affairs Nigeria Legion, Morenike Grace Henry, said, “I thank the Chief of Army Staff and Mr. President for their assistance in enabling the Legion to reposition itself in keeping to its mandate of providing training for veterans among other things.

 “The Legion will be able to engage in suitable activities for the training, employment and settlement of ex-servicemen and the education of their children as they engage relevant authorities for more coordination and support.”

The Director, Veteran Affairs, Nigeria Army, Maj.-Gen. MT Durowaiye, who led the Nigerian veterans affairs team on official visit to the 5- day training at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Facilities at Michigan, said: “After our team toured the  centre and got socialized with the veterans at the centre, they were able to have idea of  the training idea of transitional housing, veteran rescue program, life skills, employment training, health care services, transportation/meals/clothing, substance abuse intervention and housing placement.

 “The visiting Nigerian Veteran team was able to interact with some United States of America veterans. It was a great experience, the team also learned about the process of bringing in the veterans from the street and processing them into the safety”.
