Nigeria needs Barau’s legislative experience for Senate president – APC youth leader

As the battle for leadership of the 10th Senate intensifies, All Progressives Congress (APC) Northwest Youth Leader, Abdulhamid Umar Mohammed has reiterated that Sen. Barau Jibrin’s wealth of experience is critical for the next Senate president.

Mohammed told journalists in Kaduna that Barau’s experience, having been a two term Senator, stands him out of all the candidates, and will help him direct the Senate. He said the lawmaker’s diplomacy will ensure synergy between the National Assembly and other arms of government, while his good decision – making would help to ensure more development of the country, adding that Sen. Barau has sponsored many important bills in the hallowed chamber that have been passed into law, showing that he has the required acumen to steer the Senate affairs successfully.

“APC’s strength in the Northwest has stood the test of time and that was why Sen. Bola Tinubu was able to beat other parties in the region. Official election result figures show that the Northwest produced highest number of votes for Tinubu, which makes it the natural and legitimate claimant to the number three seat. Northwest showed up for Tinubu when it mattered most at the just concluded election by providing largest votes, the region should also benefit from it’s performance as the party’s stronghold.

“While we are aware of several plots by regionalist political actors to place their respective zones at advantage where it is not deserved, there is no doubt that it is the turn of Northwest to produce Senate president because since 1960 we have never produced one. This is the time for the zone to shine, considering it’s contributions in the previous elections and having examined the credentials of all the candidates aspiring for Senate president from the Northwest, Sen. Jibrin Barau is most suitable to be the next president of the Nigerian Senate.

“Sen. Barau will be one of the finest Senate president to ever lead the hallowed chamber, should he be chosen for the position. Barau should be the next Senate president owing to the wealth of experience he has as a long-term lawmaker and his contribution to the success of APC in the Northwest. He has all the leadership qualities required to lead a dynamic and diverse hallowed chamber like the National Assembly,” he said.

The APC youth leader recalled that Senator Jibrin secured over 200,000 votes in Kano state to ensure Tinubu’s victory in the last presidential election and, “the best way to compensate the competent Senator is by making him the next Senate president. Jibrin will leverage his versatility and experience as the longest-serving Senator from the Northwest region to help the country advance”.
